Broadway Is Back, “Un-Block The Music” Celebrates At “Six”

Female empowerment at its best! Broadway at its best! New York City at its best! “Un-Block The Music” saw Six last night. I don’t do reviews, but I can’t help saying that this show is exactly what we all need. The “Six” wives of Henry VIII tell their side of the story in a rock concert style. If the house was not sold out, it was close to it, and the audience (all vaccinated and masked) cheered and clapped and stopped their way through 80 minutes of non-stop music.

Un-Block The Music has been lucky enough to speak to so many amazing theater makers through this pandemic, but it is the first time I have stepped foot in a theater since March 2020, and it felt great. The staff at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre were organized, courteous and dare I say “Friendly”? Yes…friendly New Yorkers (we have such a bad rap)…

Anyway, the “Pit band” was on stage as Ladies in Waiting. For my “Women Wonders” column, I have been in contact with Julia Schade who is the music director as well as keyboard player and conductor on stage, but she had to pull out of the performance last night due to an illness. That made me sad…but…I intend to catch up with her when she feels better.

Broadway is a bit different. You can’t stand at the stage door (but you can get a signed program digitally). There is no intermission with bar service…but, what is important is that people are getting back to work, and using imagination and diligence to keep everyone safe. I also went out to eat at Empanada Mama before the show, proof of vaccine was required there as well, but everything else was the same as when I left it 18 months ago.

“Un-Block The Music” does not care who you vote for…I just care that we get this health crisis under control. Please get vaccinated, wear your mask…Do your part to keep the doors of theaters open!

And…if I have not said this before…thank you to Boneau/Bryan-Brown Public Relations for setting me up with some great interviews over the last year and a half.

Check out my interview with Paul Gatehouse the show’s Sound Designer and stay tuned for my interview with Julia!
